Biological target: Bunamidine hydrochloride is a veterinary anti-platyhelmintic agent used for Echinococcus granulosus and Taenia hydatigena.
In vitro activity: TBD
In vivo activity: Bunamidine, in the rat heart, caused a dose-dependent decrease in spontaneous heart rate, coronary flow and isometric systolic tension, but increased diastolic tension at 10,000 ng/ml. Bunamidine altered electrical activity by prolonging PR, QRS and QT intervals. It also produced partial heart block and ventricular standstill. Lastly, b unamidine diminished cardiac glycogen, ATP and creatine phosphate and increased tissue content of d-glucose-6-phosphate, l-(−)-glycerol-1-phosphate and lactate. Conversion of phosphorylase b to a was increased. Reference: Gen Pharmacol. 1978;9(2):101-12. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/566235/
