Description: Abamectin is a mixture of the macrocyclic lactones Avermectin B1a and Avermectin B1b. It has both insecticidal and anthelmintic actions and is used in both agriculture and veterinary medicine. Abamectin can inhibit nicotinic acetylcholine receptors of worms and can also inhibit chikungunya and yellow fever viruses. It is sometimes used for mosquito control.

Biological target: Avermectin B1 (Abamectin) is a widely used insecticide and anthelmintic.
In vitro activity: Previous studies showed that ABA (Abamectin) could induce cytotoxicity in multiple cell lines, including CHOK1 cells, HeLa cells, and HepG2 cells. In the current study, mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF) cell line was used to study the cytotoxicity of ABA. After a 12-h ABA treatment, the cytotoxicity was assessed using the MTT viability assay. As shown in Fig. 1a, ABA induced a significant concentration-dependent growth inhibition, beginning at 4.4 μg/mL (5 μM) concentration. The calculated IC50 value for ABA treatment of 12 h in MEF cells is 39.7 μg/mL (45.6 μM). As the IC50 of ABA is approximately 34.8 μg/mL (40 μM), this study chose 34.8 μg/mL (40 μM) as reference concentration in the subsequent experiments. In vivo activity: Acute ABM (Abamectin) exposure was associated with significant (p ≤ 0.05) increases in the hepatic tissue MDA concentration and CAT enzyme activity, as well as a significant drop in GSH level, compared to the control rats. Ascorbic acid and/or SO supplementation significantly (p ≤ 0.05) ameliorated ABM-induced alterations in hepatic MDA, CAT and GSH concentrations. Except for CAT, there were no significant variations among the treated groups (ABM + AA, ABM + SO or Combination group) (Table 4).
